The United States of America was built on a basis of immigration. So, most Americans can trace their roots to a family that came to America as migrants. The federal government creates the laws that govern immigration into our country. Over the last few decades, there has been a lot of debate over how those laws are carried out.
Unfortunately, our current County Executive has done nothing to help enforce our nation’s immigration laws. Immediately after taking office, Stewart Pittman pulled out of an agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Agreement 287g). In this agreement, Anne Arundel County officials alerted ICE upon learning that an arrested individual was an illegal immigrant. This notification only happened when they were arrested for committing a separate crime. As a result, Anne Arundel County lost $3 million of grant money from the federal government.
Under my administration, we will work with ICE to carry out federal immigration laws. I will not use county funds to actively search for illegal immigrants. However, federal agents will be made aware when an individual is arrested for a crime and is in this country illegally. We do not get to choose what laws we enforce, including immigration laws. All immigrants are welcome to live and work in Anne Arundel County, as long as they follow the law.
