Every day, various groups and special interests are working to weaken our Second Amendment rights. By banning standard capacity magazines and “assault” weapons, they are doing anything they can to take away our Constitutional right to defend ourselves and our families.
As County Executive, I will do everything in my power to protect your Second Amendment rights. So, I will veto any county bill that restricts law-abiding citizens’ right to own a firearm. Also, I will pressure the Maryland State legislature to make Maryland a “shall issue” state. This would put us in line with all our neighboring states. Also, I will support legislation that allows for self-defense as a valid reason to obtain a concealed carry permit. In doing so, enables residents to carry their firearms legally outside their homes for self-protection.
Recently, the Anne Arundel County Council passed Bill 109-21. This bill imposes vague and costly security requirements for firearms dealers doing business in the county. Hence, if the dealer isn’t in compliance, the law would impose severe fines and penalties on the dealer. Additionally, compliance is determined at the whim of the police, which would make it easy to abuse.
Fortunately, Maryland Shall Issue (MSI), a Maryland gun rights group, has filed a lawsuit in state court against Anne Arundel County, challenging the enactment of the bill. I fully support MSI’s suit, along with the plaintiffs, Cindy’s Hot Shots, Field Traders, Worth-A-Shot, and Pasadena Arms.
The right to self-defense is a God-given, natural right that shall not be infringed. If you do not believe that, ask the people of Ukraine how important it is to have the right to bear arms.
