Following the law is the basis of any modern society. We establish laws to ensure that citizens have a set of standards to live by, work by, and keep us safe. When people break the law, we must hold them accountable for their actions. All three branches of government must work together to make sure a community is safe.
As County Executive, I will work with the Legislative Branch to ensure that we have laws that make sense, work for everyone, and have reasonable penalties. I will work with the Judicial Branch to ensure that criminals are prosecuted fairly. Additionally, I will work with the Chief of Police and the Sheriff to ensure that our officers have all the tools that they need to effectively do their jobs. And while I believe people make mistakes and deserve a second chance, I also believe that a person needs to be held accountable for their actions. If there is no accountability, people will never learn from their mistakes.
We also need community support to help law enforcement ensure that people are held accountable for violating the law. I do not and will not support the defund the police movement. I will stand by them and support them. However, there are people who do not trust and support the police and I understand those concerns. Those concerns are valid and real. I encourage you to read my position on building a bridge between the police department our citizens. It will take all of us working together to reduce crime in Anne Arundel County.
